It Was Not the Soccer: Jamie Carragher Saying “Internationale”
The UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2023/2024 season came to an end on Saturday, May 31, 2024, when Real Madrid beat Dortmund 2 – 0 in the final. It was an exciting game to end a great UCL season filled with a dazzling display of football talent, breathtaking matches, and unforgettable moments. However, beyond the thrilling action on the pitch, one of the standout elements of Champions League coverage has been the charismatic and insightful team of UCL Today hosted by analysts Kate Abdo, Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher, and Micah Richards. Their chemistry, combined with their deep understanding of the game, has added so much enjoyment for viewers, making the pre-match and post-match discussions as compelling as the games themselves. UCL Today is popular with spectators as well as the soccer players. UCL Today is soccer’s version of Inside the NBA.
Greatest Moment
While there were many great moments from UCL Today this past season, one sticks out in particular. It came when Jamie Carragher, with his signature Liverpudlian charm, was interviewing AC Milan star Rafael Leao, and hilariously pronounced “Internazionale” with his Scouse accent during a live broadcast. You can see Micah Richardson holding back his tears until the interview concluded. You knew this was going to be an instant classic moment. Twitter erupted after the incident and Carragher continues to defend his pronunciation. Famous Italian soccer star Alessandro Del Piero, had an impression of Carragher, when he filled in as a host on UCL Today. Even Dora the Explorer has joined in mocking Jamie Carragher! Carragher will never live this moment down.
I am happy CBS found the perfect team to cover the UCL. I am looking forward to seeing the UCL Today team next season.
