Typically, my wife takes over the television at night, so I end up reading or doing something next to her on the couch – we have different preferences in television and movies. But, a few times a year, we end up watching a show together. When several of our friends told us about Netflix’s “Ripley,” we decided to give it a try. Netflix’s “Ripley” was a breath of fresh air. Despite having a slower pace, and being black and white, I was drawn in to the phenomenal acting, the script and film noir visuals (I did take a film class in high school). “Ripley” offers a thrilling exploration of identity and morality, and outstanding performances from Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn. It was a piece of art.

The Show

The series takes place over 8 episodes, and is approximately 8 hours long. From the very first episode, “Ripley” sets a moody tone, enhanced by its stylish cinematography and amazing music that perfectly complements the narrative’s tension. The story follows Thomas Ripley, a con artist with an uncanny ability to mimic the behaviors and mannerisms of those around him, as he navigates the glamorous yet perilous world of the wealthy elite.

The Acting

The acting was phenomenal, but Andrew Scott, as the enigmatic Tom Ripley, stole the show. Scott’s portrayal of Ripley is both charismatic and unsettling. He captures the character’s complexity, making us empathize with a man who is charming and repulsive.

The writing is sharp and incisive, balancing a clever story with moments of genuine suspense. Each episode builds tension, revealing layers of Ripley’s psyche while unraveling the tangled web of lies he weaves. Some may find the show slow, but I found the show thrilling and could not wait to see what was going to happen next. The pacing kept me on edge, with twists and turns that challenge perceptions of morality.

Worth the Watch

Visually, the series is a treat, with luxurious settings in Italy that enhance the story’s themes of wealth and privilege. The attention to detail in costumes and locations immerses the audience in Ripley’s world, making the stakes feel all the more real.

If you and the wife are looking for a good show to watch together, watch Netflix’s “Ripley.”It’s a thrilling watch for anyone interested in the intricacies of deceit and the human condition. Netflix has delivered a series that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a standout addition to its catalog.
