While on vacation in Miami, I received an advertisement in my Instagram feed for the Balloon Museum Miami. Usually, I just ignore the advertisements, but the photos on the Instagram page looked amazing. The Balloon Museum’s website describes the exhibition as “a format created by a curatorial team that designs and realizes contemporary art exhibitions with specific works in which ‘air’ is a distinctive element.” I figured visiting the museum would be a fun family activity. Without telling my wife or kids, I purchased tickets and told them I had a surprise. The Balloon Museum Miami was one of the greatest and most memorable immersive and interactive experiences we have done as a family. You have to visit the museum when it comes to a city near you.
Theme
The theme for Miami is “Let’s Fly” which is based on the idea of lightness and flight. Past themes included “Pop Air: Life is Inflatable” (Barcelona and Berlin) and “Emotion Air: Art You Can Feel” (Dusseldorf, Brusselles, and Rome). It is an immersive art experience that combines the whimsical world of balloons with innovative design and interactive installations. The Miami museum showcases pieces from 20 international artists.
Getting There
The Balloon Museum Miami is taking place at the Mana Wynwood, a massive event space in the art and entertainment district. There is parking on site. The cost for parking was the only thing that irritated me. It was $27 for two hours. There was an option for street parking, but it was far away – you know how that goes when you have two young children. Parking will obviously differ depending on the location of the venue.
Tickets
Buying tickets is very easy. I suggest buying tickets in advance online, because tickets can sell out. The Balloon Museum’s ticket page allows you to buy a ticket on the day and time of your choice – based on availability. Prices depend on the time and day you go. I bought tickets for a Thursday, with entrance starting at 1:15 PM. The tickets were $39 for adults and $29 for kids between the ages 4 through 12. Yes, this a bit pricey, but I got my money’s worth.
The museum operates on a timed-entry system to manage visitor flow and enhance the experience. For example, I purchased tickets for a 1:15 PM entry. We arrived at 1:00 PM, but had to lineup in the 1:15 PM entry line. I suggest, arriving at the museum a few minutes before your scheduled entry time to avoid delays. Despite decent size crowds, once inside the exhibits, it never felt overcrowded.
Once Inside
Visitors are generally free to explore the museum at their own pace, moving through the various themed rooms and interactive installations. Make sure your phone is charged and ready to snap a lot of pictures. It will be an experience you will never forget. It took us about two hours to go through all the exhibits. While inside the exhibits, I overheard one mother describe the museum perfectly. She stated “this is so therapeutic.”
